Ambassador Profile: Laura - GirlGains Community

Hello everyone! My name is Laura and I’m 25 from Hertfordshire. I’m currently working full time in PR and Events but in my spare time I write a blog/Instagram page called OH_MY_BOD where I love to experiment with nutritious recipes, workouts, share my fitness journey and of course spread the positive #GirlGains message!

So what is my journey? Well, I’m the first to admit that I’ve always been a marketing man’s dream.Like most twenty-something females the dream was to look like a Victoria Secret model and I would have spent my very last penny trying to achieve the ‘dream’ body (whatever that is!). I was a sucker for the latest fad diet and ‘quick fix’ slimming tablet that promised miracles. You name it, I’ve tried it! But the only thing that was really losing the pounds was my bank balance. I often found myself spending hours in the gym trying to burn off that large Domino’s pizza I binged on the night before, all because quite frankly this dieting (or should I say torture?) had left me ravenous. I would have a massive blowout for a few days, feel so guilty and then restrict my body to an extreme calorie deficit. And the cycle continued…

After spending months researching nutrition and clean eating I finally managed to find a balance where I was fuelling my body in the way that it deserved. However, my obsession had now moved from food to exercise. I found myself in the gym every single day (sometimes twice a day) for two hours at a time. Everything else in my life came second and I would even make excuses to not attend social occasions if it interfered with my training schedule. Eventually my body had enough and I was bed bound for a week with exhaustion. I was unhappy, unhealthy and I knew I needed to break this cycle…

I followed the #GirlGains hashtag on Instagram and Tally, Zanna and Vicki for some time and came across so many girls’ pages who were just like me. They had hectic schedules, jobs and a social life but were still dedicated to become healthier, fitter and stronger. After toying with the idea for months through fear of being criticised, I finally decided to start my Instagram page OH_MY_BOD to share my journey and I’m so glad I did. It’s created a community where I’ve been able to connect so many girls who had similar experiences to me and who I could relate to on so many levels. We all have different goals and journeys but we encourage and support each other to be the best we can be. There is so much hate and negativity out there in world, especially across social media, so it’s inspiring to be part of a movement which promotes the empowerment of women,

But most importantly the #GirlGains movement has showed me that being happy is more important than making physical gains. Yes, we all want strong, fit bodies but it’s shown me that a healthy and happy mind is way more important than having a six pack. It’s encouraged me to find a balance that works for me. I no longer dread my workouts, I look forward to them. I no longer dread eating out with friends, I love it. Like every journey, I still have good days and bad days but I’ve finally found my balance and I couldn’t be happier.

The #GirlGains message is so strong and I’m thrilled to be an ambassador to help spread the message to other girls far and wide. I’m looking forward to meeting more of you lovely ladies soon. In the meantime, feel free to head over to my Instagram and say Hi! Lots of Love, Laura xxx
